Getting Skin Serious in Regional Australia

Given the nature of their work, outdoor workers are particularly exposed to high UV levels and can receive up to 10 times more sun exposure than indoor workers.

Two leading Melanoma and Skin Cancer organisations, Melanoma and Skin Cancer Advocacy Network (MSCAN) and Melanoma and Skin Cancer (MASC) Trials and have partnered with BlazeAid to deliver an important message about protecting your skin under the harsh Australian sun.

The video features BlazeAid Founder, Kevin Butler, a true Aussie character and 2021 Farming Legend of the Year and Associate Professor Victoria Mar, Dermatologist and MASC Trials researcher and Board Member.

Skin cancer is Australia’s National Cancer, and it’s even more common in regional Australia:

  • Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70.
  • Skin cancers (melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer) account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia.
  • Australians living in rural areas are at a particularly high risk of skin cancer due to demographics and occupation. They also face challenges in accessing healthcare.
  • Cancer patients who live furthest away from a treating centre are more likely to have a poor outcome. We want to change this!

Hey Regional Australia: it’s time to get skin serious!

BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works with families and individuals in rural Australia after natural disasters such as fires and floods. Working alongside rural families, volunteers help to rebuild fences and other structures that have been damaged or destroyed.

We’ve partnered with BlazeAid to help keep their volunteers sun safe and skin serious.

“BlazeAid volunteers are committing their time and energy to take on this critical disaster response work and we want to ensure they are sun and UV safe. It is so important that we all minimise the risks associated with exposure to the fierce Australian sun. This is also a great opportunity to educate the broader community on the importance of sun protection.”
